The Youth Council
The youth council provides direction and guidance to the Youth Strategy. Members of this council have lived experience with homelessness or at-risk factors. The youth council meets once a week, and representatives from the youth council attend the steering committee meetings bi-monthly. During these steering committee meetings, the youth council presents the projects and initiatives to the steering committee for approval. Having a diverse group of young people with lived experience ensures that the Youth Strategy includes different perspectives and approaches to discussions and decisions from multiple perspectives. Kayla Vickery (she/her)
Making real change for youth in need is important work for me because I was once a youth who struggled myself. Helping others is a part of my daily life working one on one with those who struggle with addiction, mental health, and homelessness. I started public speaking in the addiction recovery community when I was 23, hoping that my story would help inspire others to seek support. As someone who once had to reach out for housing and mental health resources as a youth, I got to see first-hand where the resources were lacking. This is what drives my passion in making real change where change is desperately needed, and supporting youth in accessing resources as well as an understanding support network.

I am a compassionate mother, entrepreneur, and a true advocate for social change. I use my experience and passion for provoking a deeper conversation around youth homelessness, single motherhood, mental health, addiction abuse, and the challenges many face in marginalized communities. By using my voice, I hope our youth can overcome adversity, domestic abuse, and homelessness, and I hope to use my experiences to empower and uplift others. I envision a more equitable society, and I’m committed to doing my part in bringing that vision to life!

Hi, I'm Saba Soley, a passionate second-year student at Queen's University, pursuing a degree in arts. Driven by a desire to make a positive impact in both the legal and business sectors, I hope to use my knowledge and experiences to help others. The York Region Youth Strategy Council has been an amazing opportunity for me to provide support, resources, and change to homeless youth in our region. I’m a firm believer that with collaboration, we can all make a positive change in our communities and create a brighter future for all. Outside of academics and volunteering, I love to read fiction novels, play violin, and spend time with my dogs.
